Seaman Dykema was an optical specialist serving aboard the repair ship USS Cadmus (AR-14) at the Charleston Naval Base, South Carolina. On 24 September 1951, he was electrocuted while working on a heavy scaling machine on board ship as it was docking at Charleston.
Dykema was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.
