Private First Class Johnson was a member of Battery B, 196th Field Artillery Battalion, X Corps. On 1 January 1952, he was driving a truck near Pia-ri, North Korea when it collided with another vehicle killing him.

Johnson was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal.
