Private James was a member of Headquarters and Service Company, 194th Engineer Combat Battalion, U.S. Army. On 25 December 1951, he was riding in a vehicle on Highway 17, 8 miles west of Kapyong, South Korea when it overturned killing him.

James was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal.
