Private Del Pizzo was a member of the Replacement Company, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. On 30 August 1952, while on a training march, his company unknowingly entered a mine field near Kumgong, North Korea. He received fatal multiple fragment wounds.

Del Pizzo was awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
