Private First Class Hardin was a member of the 40th Reconnaissance Company, 40th Infantry Division. He was returning from his tour in Korea in a C-46 Commando transport when it crashed in Idaho on 7 January 1953 killing all on board.

Hardin was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
