Biography:

Sergeant Condit was a member of the 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. He was Killed in Action while fighting the enemy in South Korea on 23 January 1951.

Condit was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

Military Service

Sgt. Condit was inducted into the U.S. Army on 16 August 1943 at Rochester, New York (ASN: 42 023 391). After training, he was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 307th Infantry Regiment, 77th Infantry Division. He would see combat in the Philippines and on Okinawa where, in May 1945, he would earn a Bronze Star Medal with valor "V" device for heroic achievement (see Photos section for his citation). After the Japanese surrender, he and the rest of the 77th Infantry Division would go to Japan to serve as part of the Army of Occupation. Sgt. Condit would be honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant on 19 January 1946. He would later be awarded an Oak Leaf Cluster to his Bronze Star Medal for having been a recipient of the Combat Infantryman Badge during World War II.

Sgt. Condit enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve on 23 March 1949 (ASN: ER42023391) and was called up for active duty on 12 October 1950. He was then assigned to Company "B", 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division in Korea, and would be killed in action three months later on 23 January 1951. His body was returned to the U.S., and he was laid to rest in St. Francis Cemetery in Phelps, New York. For his service in Korea he was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge (2nd Award) and the Purple Heart.
