Private First Class Cohen was a veteran of World War II. In Korea, he was a member of the 712th Transportation Railroad Operation Battalion, U.S. Army. On 8 February 1952, he died of multiple injuries when he fell off a moving train near Kumkok-ri, South Korea.

Cohen was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
