Private Butler was a member of Headquarters Company, 64th Medium Tank Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division. He died in Seoul, South Korea of pneumonia on 21 January 1952.

Butler was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
