Private First Class Bishop was a member of the 17th Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division. He was seriously wounded by the enemy in South Korea on 9 March 1951 and returned to duty on 15 April 1951. He was Killed in Action while patrolling his front lines near Yanggu, South Korea by enemy mortar fire on 17 February 1952. It was his second voluntary tour in Korea.
For his leadership and valor, Private First Class Bishop was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
