Corporal Burke was a veteran of World War II. During the Korean War, he was a member of the 11th Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. On 25 June 1952, during a training jump, he lost his parachute harness and fell to his death.

Burke was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
