Sergeant Bumpus was a member of Weapons Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division. He was Killed in Action during the withdrawal from Yudam-ni to Hagaru-ri in the Chosin Reservoir Area of North Korea on 3 December 1950.

Bumpus was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
