Corporal Smith was a member of Company E, 2nd Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division. On 12 July 1950, he died of a heart attack near Taejon, South Korea.

Smith was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
