Private First Class Riley was a member of the 176th Armored Field Artillery Battalion, 40th Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action while fighting the enemy in North Korea on 24 July 1953.

Riley was awarded the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal.
