Airman Second Class Benson was stationed at Lockbourne Air Force Base, Columbus, Ohio. On 3 October 1952, he was on a pass with two other airmen, when he was involved in an automobile accident. He died of those injuries at the hospital in Bellevue, Ohio, on 6 October 1952.

Benson was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.
