Corporal Auer was a member of the 8th Food Service Squadron, 8th Air Base Group. He was seriously injured and evacuated to the hospital ship USS Repose (AH-16), where he died of a subarachroid hemorrhage on 7 July 1951.

Auer was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal.
