On 3 February 1972, Captain James Jay Crawford was serving with the 56th Special Operations Wing, 7th Air Force in Thailand.

On that day Capt Crawford died in the crash of a fixed wing aircraft in which he was the pilot. The crash was due to non-hostile action. His body was recovered.
