First Lieutenant Thomas was a member of the 45th Aviation Company (Provisional), 45th Infantry Division. On 12 January 1954, while flying a reconnaissance mission near Amp'yong-ni, Korea, his aircraft crashed killing him.

Thomas was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
