Private First Class Staten was a member of Battery A, 933rd Anti-Aircraft Artillery (Automatic Weapons) Battalion, U.S. Army. He died of other causes on 3 September 1951 at the 121st Evacuation Hospital.

Staten was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
