Captain Shuler was the commanding officer of Company F, 179th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division. He was Wounded in Action while fighting the enemy near Chorwon, North Korea on 16 June 1952 and died at the Tokyo Army Hospital on 24 August 1952 of hepatitis
.
For his outstanding leadership and valor, Captain Shuler was awarded the Silver Star Medal, the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
