Private Mathews was a member of the 8th Motor Vehicle Squadron, 8th Fighter Bomber Wing. He developed pneumonia and was taken to the 121st Evacuation Hospital where he died on 27 March 1952.

Mathews was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal.
