Private First Class Mathis was a member of Company K, 3rd Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division. On 5 October 1950, he was killed when his truck overturned near Pusan, South Korea.

Mathis was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal.
