Corporal Shipers was a member of the Tank Company, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. On 27 June 1953 he was struck by mortar fragments while fighting the enemy in North Korea and died on the way to the Mobile Army Surgical Hospital.

Shipers was awarded the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
