Private First Class Reed was a member of the 2nd Field Artillery Rocket Battery, U.S. Army. He was Wounded in Action while fighting the enemy in Korea on 6 October 1951 and died of those wounds the same day.

Reed was awarded the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
