Corporal Sumrall was a member of the 82nd Engineer Pipeline Company, U.S. Army. On 24 January 1952, he was killed when his truck struck a land mine in North Korea.

Sumrall was awarded the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
