Private First Class Lewis was a medic with the Medical Detachment, 92nd Armored Field Artillery Battalion, IX Corps. On 30 April 1953, he was assaulted and received a mortal blow to the head by person(s) unknown.

Lewis was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal.
