Private First Class Hauer was a member of Headquarters and Service Company, 79th Engineer Construction Battalion, U.S. Army. On 20 May 1952, while attempting to overtake another vehicle, his vehicle overturned killing him.

Hauer was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
