Staff Sergeant Handy was a crew chief of a C-46 Transport with the 336th Troop Carrier Squadron. He was killed when his C-47 Transport crashed during winter maneuvers at Camp Drum, New York, on 10 February 1952.

Handy was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.
