Private First Class De Grant was a member of Headquarters Company, 17th Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division. On 9 February 1952, he was driving a vehicle in North Korea when it overturned and pinned him underneath.

De Grant was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
