Corporal Berry was a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action while leading his squad in a courageous assault on enemy bunkers near Huddangi-Ni, North Korea.

For his leadership and valor, Corporal Berry was awarded the Silver Star Medal, the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
