Corporal Sands was a member of the Medical Detachment, Division Artillery, 3rd Infantry Division. He died of other causes on 23 July 1952 at CT-242170, North Korea.

Sands was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
