Private Burgin was a member of the 58th Field Artillery Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division. On 29 July 1951, he drowned while bathing in the river near Ku-Sa-ri, South Korea despite the attempted rescue by two of his comrades.

Burgin was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
