Sergeant Barnes was a member of Company C, 8th Engineer Combat Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division. On 13 September 1950, he drowned while trying to rescue another drowning soldier caught in a whirlpool at Miryong, Korea.

Barnes was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal.
