Private First Class Bangert was a member of the 90th Field Artillery Battalion, 25th Infantry Division. On 1 October 1950, during an assault crossing of the Han River, his boat capsized drowning him.

Bangert was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal.
