Corporal Van Deventer was a member of Battery B, 204th Field Artillery Battalion, U.S. Army. He contracted hemorrhagic fever and was taken to the 11th Evacuation Hospital where he died on 8 June 1952.

Van Deventer was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
