Private Genung was a member of the 34th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division. He was listed as Missing in Action while fighting the enemy near Taejon, South Korea on 20 July 1950 and returned to duty on 22 July 1950. He was listed as Missing in Action again on 4 September 1950 and returned to duty the following day. He was Killed in Action while fighting the enemy in South Korea on 23 September 1950.

Genung was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
