Sergeant First Class Spence was a member of the Heavy Mortar Company, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. He died of other causes on 23 January 1951 near Chechon, South Korea.

Spence was awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
