Corporal Toth was a veteran of World War II, fighting in the Pacific. In Korea, he was a squad leader in Company I, 3rd Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division. On 5 June 1951, his unit was assaulting a hill near Hwachon, North Korea. He was leading the assault, when an enemy bullet struck him in the head killing him instantly.
For his leadership and valor, Corporal Toth was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
