Private First Class McCallister was with Battery A, 9th Field Artillery Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division. He was killed while engaged with the enemy on 26 March 1951 in South Korea.

McCallister was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
