Captain Crane was a pilot of a F-94 Starfire jet fighter serving as adviser to the Japanese Air Defense Force. On 28 May 1952, his aircraft crashed as he was taking off from an airfield on Honshu, Japan.

Crane was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.
