Corporal Butler was a member of the 26th Scout Dog Platoon, U.S. Army. On 3 July 1952, he drowned while swimming across the Hantan Chon River near Munggogae, North Korea.

Butler was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
