Captain Bruce was a trained pilot of a B-50 jet bomber and had served with the 341st Bomber Squadron, 97th Bomber Group. In January 1952, the Air Force Institute Of Technology (AFIT) selected him to study Nuclear Engineering at North Carolina State University. On 24 February 1952, he was returning to AFIT when his automobile was struck by a train. He died at the hospital at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in, Dayton, Ohio.
Captain Bruce was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.
