Corporal Hunter was a veteran of World War II. In Korea, he was a member of Battery D, 68th Anti-Aircraft Artillery (Automatic Weapons) Battalion. On 29 June 1952, he lost control of the vehicle he was driving near Yong Dung Po, South Korea, and it overturned killing him.

Hunter was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean War Service Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
