Private Montano was a member of Company C, 8th Engineer Combat Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division. On 1 August 1951, he drowned while swimming with friends near Tangmang-ni, Korea.

Montano was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal.
