Private First Class Herrera was a member of the 629th Medical Clearing Company, U.S. Army. On 15 March 1952, his vehicle skidded on a mountain road near Chunchen, South Korea, overturned and killed him.

Herrera was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
