Aviation Electronics Technician Second Class Schmid was the radar operator of an AD-4N Skyraider night dive bomber with Detachment F, Composite Squadron 35 aboard the carrier USS Kearsarge (CV-33). On 28 January 1953, during a night heckler mission, the pilot reported that the aircraft was lost. He was listed as Missing in Action and was presumed dead on 14 June 1954. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
Schmid was awarded the Air Medal, the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
