Private First Class Rutt was a member of the 8th Field Artillery Battalion, 25th Infantry Division. He was seriously wounded by an enemy missile in South Korea on 2 August 1950 and died of those wounds later that day.

Rutt was awarded the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
