Private First Class Hansen was a member of Battery B, 75th Field Artillery Battalion. He was fording a stream near Kumhwa, Korea on 9 July 1953, when he stepped into a large hole, the stream carried him away causing him to drown.

Hansen was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
