Corporal Golter was a member of Company F, 2nd Battalion, 5th Infantry Regimental Combat Team. While on a reconnaissance patrol in the "Punch Bowl Area" of North Korea on 19 February 1953, he was seriously wounded by an enemy hand grenade and died of those wounds later that day at the Battalion Aid Station.
Golter was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
