Green Edward Miller, Jr. Green Edward Miller, Jr. was born on 14 January 1948, the only son of Green Edward Miller, Sr. and Ruby Miller. He was born while his father was stationed in West Germany. Via the Selective Service, Green was inducted into the U.S. Army in October 1968. He began his tour of duty in Vietnam on 3 November 1969. On 5 May 1970 Green was a Staff Sergeant serving with Company A, 2d Battalion, 502d Infantry, 101st Airborne Division. He was on a search and destroy mission on the east side of mountainous jungles adjacent to the Asha Valley. As the men began to move out on patrol along the ridgeline, they were immediately ambushed with an intensive firefight by the NVA. Their point man, Corporal Ivory Lee McKinney was immediately shot in the chest and upon seeing this, SSG Miller who was the slack man, instantly went to his aid and attempted to pull him to safety. Miller was fatally shot in his endeavor to rescue CPL McKinney who also died on that day. Sgt. Miller's life ended that day while trying to assist his fellow soldier and friend. On 10 May 1970, Green's family was notified that he was Missing in Action and ten days later his family received the devastating news that he was deceased. Death and Burial He is survived by his wife Regina Williams-Miller; his parents, Green Sr., and Ruby Miller; his only sister, Martha Miller; his father-in-law, K. P. Williams (who also served in Vietnam) and mother-in-law, Hazel Williams. He also leaves behind many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
