Darrell D. Council Darrell D. Council was the son of Allen H. and Willie Myrtle Archer Council. In April 1951, Private First Class Darrell D. Council was serving with Company D, 1st Battalion, 5th Regimental Combat Team, attached to the 24th Infantry Division, in Korea. On 22-23 April, PFC Council's unit was engaged with enemy forces at Panghwa-Gol, Korea. When his unit was forced to fall back under an overwhelming enemy assault, PFC Council remained at his machine gun to cover the withdrawal. PFC Council manned his weapon, alone, delivering a deadly fire into the oncoming enemy until his position was overrun and he was Killed in Action. PFC Council's extraordinary heroism and selfless sacrifice for his fellow soldiers earned him the U.S. Army's second highest award for valor, the Distinguished Service Cross. Darrell Council received a posthumous promotion to the rank of Corporal. Medals, Awards and Badges Distinguished Service Cross Distinguished Service Cross Citation The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Darrel D. Council (RA18320708), Private First Class, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy of the United Nations while serving with Company D, 1st Battalion, 5th Regimental Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division. Private First Class Council distinguished himself by extraordinary heroism in action against enemy aggressor forces at Panghwa-Gol, Korea, on 22 and 23 April 1951. When his unit was forced to fall back under an overwhelming enemy assault, this heroic soldier remained at his machine gun to cover the withdrawal. True to the highest traditions of the military service, Private First Class Council steadfastly manned his weapon alone, delivering a deadly fire into the oncoming enemy masses until his position was overrun.
